21 DSD (Day Sugar Detox) This is no Joke!

My Prevent Coach suggested a 21 Day Sugar Detox. At first I thought-no problem. I can just stop eating sweets and add honey to my tea. Then I read the details of the challenge. They were much more involved than just cutting the candy!

Here is a list of things I can't eat for 21 days:

Any Artificial Sweeteners
Sugars derived from natural sources (Honey, Stevia, Beet Sugar, Cane Sugar)
Sugar additives in foods like whole grain bread, Spaghetti Sauce and just about every other processed food)

Here is a link with the expanded list

Basically this rules out all sweet tastes except for fruit and some sweet veggies like yams and carrots.

Here are some notes I jotted down from my first and hardest days of the Sugar Detox:

4/15/15-Day 1 of 21 Day Sugar Detox-

Went straight for my coffee this morning and poured it and then remembered I can’t have sugar. So I poured it out in the sink and made myself some Chai Tea and Green Tea. I added some powdered creamer and some nutmeg for flavor. It still doesn't taste very good.  I’m forcing it down because of my hatred for unsweetened coffee and sincere need for caffeine right now.
Banana and apple for breakfast because my Granola and yogurt are both out due to sugar. This is going to suck!!!!!!

4/16/15-Day 2 of 21 Day Sugar Detox-

It’s easier to get excited about good tasting healthy foods when you aren't relying on sugar to make you feel good.  I've realized that Greek food is primarily sugar free if you get meat, salad, hummus and Whole Wheat Pitas (.02g of sugar-I let one slide). Bring on the Tzatziki and Kalamatas!

4/17/15-Day 3 of 21 Day Sugar Detox-I am so looking forward to buying new clothes from the regular women’s department. I’m only 2 sizes away from a 16. This is what I need to focus on when I think I want some sugar!!!

4/18/15-Day 4 of 21 Day Sugar Detox-

Being home with all the food in the house is the much harder than I expected. I am turning to fruit every time I have a craving and it seems to be helping. I REALLY want some Dark Chocolate. An Orange it is!

4/20/15-Day 6 of 21 Day Sugar Detox-

I'm getting into the groove of life without sugar. I still have cravings but they aren't in the forefront of my thoughts anymore. I can usually ignore them. If I can't I just drink a glass of milk or eat some popcorn (Both 21 DSD approved).

4/23/15-Day 9 of 21 Day Sugar Detox-I feel much more in control of what I want to eat. I think of healthy foods first when I try to imagine what I'm going to make for dinner. Added plus! This detox boosted my weight loss by an extra 3 pounds. I have broken the 260's and am ready to plow through the 250's. This feeling is so worth it!
