SUGAR IS MY ENEMY

SUGAR!!! If there is one thing I have learned on this journey to health-it is this: SUGAR IS MY ENEMY.

This last, lets call it a derailment, started with the end of my 21 day sugar challenge. I felt so good while I was eliminating from my diet. I had more energy, less cravings and a better mood.

But it can be addicting. for someone like me who is a serious comfort eater it may not take that much to get back into that downward spiral of guilt. Maybe just one (insert favorite junk food here) binge and the guilt alone could send me back for more to squash those bad feelings.

listening to my body after eating, I've found that a meal high in carbohydrates will always cause cravings for more carbohydrates of any variety. From candy to baked goods-anything that my body will immediately break down into sugars. I can have a hamburger on a bun and it will trigger a need for chocolate. How am I ever supposed to succeed if I'm creating my own food hurdles.

So I've spent the last 12 days eating limited sugar. I add agave to my coffee and there are some added sugars from sauces (like marinara) and milk that I let slide by. And of course natural sugars from fruit and wine, which is just fermented fruit, right??? I eat carbs in the form of high fiber crackers, tortillas, and rolled oats. I've managed to lose 5 of those pesky 12 pounds over the last 2 weeks, I'm feeling great and having less cravings. But it can be hard work getting back into a routine and turning down all those opportunities to eat sugar. Let's face it, Sugar is EVERYWHERE!

That Combined with the way weight loss companies are cashing in on the belief that there is an easy fix to our weight loss woes-it is seriously difficult to get healthy.

Last week I had a funny encounter with a sample lady pedaling her "nutritious" fruit bar samples (containing a whopping 15 g of sugar). She got stuck with one of those samples that you really have to sell. The hot egg rolls or the free mini sausages wafting down the aisle clearly sell themselves. She asked me if I wanted one and I passed. She let me know how good they tasted and I passed again. Upon her third attempt, I let her know that I'm trying to eliminate sugar from my diet.  Her response was, "What does that do?"

She-like many other Americans-think there is a secret. As if I have a special trick you can try and all your weight related problems will be solved.

But eating a healthy balanced diet isn't supposed to be easy. Like many rewarding things in life, it takes some effort. But in the end it is completely worth it.
